DISCOVER SIAL

SIAL, a socially responsible exhibition

Active in all fields of social responsibility

SIAL is actively involved in sustainable development

Sustainability now plays an essential part in any economic activity and is at the heart of SIAL 2008, particularly because the food industry is concerned about the environmental, economic and social components of sustainable development

  • In a growingly international market, fair trade can be seen as the flagship of sustainability.
  • A pavilion dedicated entirely to fair trade has been set up in Hall 7, a new building constructed with environmentally friendly architecture, in order to house exhibitors working in this rapidly expanding market.

  • An information booth run by DNV, an international company specializing in risk management support and which partners SIAL 2008, was set up for to provide explanations on all aspects and fields of corporate social responsibility relevant to food companies, by major geographical zone
  • Bags made of apple waste, designed by Formplast Group, were distributed throughout the exhibition to 80,000 visitors. These bags are compliant with European standards governing the protection of the environment
  • Cardboard furniture was installed at the SIAL entries.

  • 80 tons of carpeting were recycled at the end of the exhibition.
  • Some 50 tons of leftovers were, as after each exhibition, collected by 300 volunteers from the Banques Alimentaires (food banks), and redistributed to charities.
  • The Association Nationale de Développement des Épiceries Solidaires (ANDES) took part in SIAL in order to build new partnerships with manufacturers. The purpose of this association is to bring associations together to establish and develop solidarity groceries. Following the requests of local communities, ANDES helps to create new groceries. Since its foundation in 2000, ANDES has helped 40 new solidarity groceries to be created within a network of almost 80 members for 200 existing groceries.
  • Waste sorting was carried out throughout the exhibition for the purpose of recycling.
